Alice's Sugar Cookies

1 cup butter flavored shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon cream of tartar
salt (less than half a teaspoon)
1 teaspoon vanilla

Blend all ingredients and roll in balls, then press flat with floured glass. Brush with milk and sprinkle sugar on top. Bake about 10 minutes at 375°.
(These cookies freeze well!)
